How I’ve Been Planning the Rhythm of My Weekly Schedule

Not having a typical 9-5 has always given me the opportunity to create my own schedule. This freedom also comes with what I consider a big responsibility of how I decide to spend my time. Now being in Motherhood, the rhythm of my schedule seems to change rapidly. At first, this was a huge adjustment for me. I fought hard against the current and would consider myself a failure every time I had to re-think my routine when it stopped working. Whenever the rhythm felt out of sync, it felt like I just couldn't wrap my head around what I was doing wrong.

After about 8 months of feeling like I had some kind of impossible math equation with no correct answer, I finally had the realization that in order to find peace, I had to stop fighting the current. I had to let go of the oars, let the boat go and find beauty in the rapids. I had to start getting excited about finding and creating new processes and embrace them like fun little science experiments that I could explore and test. Knowing that I would probably get it wrong a lot of the time relieved the pressure. Understanding that even having something at all to fail at was a success because at bare minimum that meant I was trying.

I wanted to share a few steps I have been taking when creating my weekly rhythm:

1. I pray for God to give me a heavenly strategy.
2. I consider what kind of season my family and I are in. Are we in need of more rest? Do we need more margin for work? Are we recovering from unexpected stress or illness?
3. I reflect on our family values which helps me know what to say "yes" to and what to say "no" to.
4. I have a thought out, concrete list of daily habits that I’d like to aim for each day.
5. I have a paper planner to write it all down in. This one, I love it.
6. I submit my schedule to God.
7. I think about what I am going to do if things go wrong. For example, if someone gets sick, bad sleep, if I miss a goal, etc. Will I fall off the rails? Or do I know what will keep me stable and secure?
And what's most encouraging to me, as a lady who likes the idea of “doing it all”, is that we CAN do it all, just not all at the same time or in the same season. There are sacrifices within my season right now, for example - working out; I just have not been able to make it a priority lately for personal reasons. But it’s not bothering me to a great extent because I know it's just a season and it will change. My other huge variable has been supporting my son's sleep. In this past season, I was waking up at 8:30am and going to bed at 11pm. Recently we stepped into a new season that allowed for a new rhythm where I have been able to get up at 4am and go to bed at 8pm. Seasons change, you can count on it.

The below scripture has brought me great comfort this year. In my younger years, it used to make me sad thinking that seasons always change. But, as I’ve aged it has allowed me grasp the importance of finding contentment in each season because inevitably, life changes.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."

I hope this has been an encouragement to you if you’ve been struggling finding a strategy to mange constant changes in your life and weekly rhythm. Don't be afraid to put delicate, meaningful thought into your weekly rhythm; the work you're doing in your home and in your business matters greatly.
